Margaret Hamilton, a groundbreaking figure in computer science and a key contributor to the software that enabled humanity’s first steps on the moon, has passed away at the age of 90. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) confirmed her death on Wednesday.
Hamilton’s innovative work in programming came at a time when the terms “software engineer” and “computer scientist” were not yet widely recognized. She honed her skills under the guidance of a prominent meteorologist at MIT, paving the way for her influential role in the Apollo moon missions.
Her legacy was further honored when she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a testament to her significant contributions to technology and space exploration.
