The Gabna community is increasingly anxious about the future of their traditional herding routes amid a surge in far-right rhetoric targeting their rights. This heightened tension comes at a critical time as Sweden approaches its elections, with Indigenous rights emerging as a contentious issue.
Åsa Larsson Blind, a Swedish-Sami politician, perceives the recent public statements made by Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Ebba Busch as a pivotal moment in the discourse surrounding Indigenous rights. In a series of speeches and articles throughout late April and May, Busch criticized the Sami people’s rights to graze reindeer on their ancestral lands, stating that the reindeer industry, while impactful over large areas, holds “limited economic significance.”
