Maro Itoje has expressed his thoughts on the importance of taking a break in professional sports, particularly after watching his teammates compete in the Nations Championship from a distance this summer. The British & Irish Lions captain opted for rest during the tournament, a decision he now sees as beneficial for his long-term performance and well-being.
After a demanding year that included the emotional toll of losing his mother, Itoje was granted a mini-sabbatical by England’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, ahead of the upcoming 2027 World Cup. This rare opportunity allowed Itoje to recharge, resulting in his first complete pre-season with Saracens since 2014. The experience has left him feeling renewed, both physically and mentally, as he prepares for the challenges ahead.
