In a surprising turn of events, the highly anticipated 2027 Met Gala, which was initially set to honor John Galliano, will not feature the designer. This decision comes despite the long efforts of fashion icon Anna Wintour to rehabilitate his image following a series of controversies in his past.
When the Metropolitan Museum of Art first revealed plans to dedicate its costume exhibition to Galliano, vintage dealer Johnny Valencia envisioned a spectacular display reminiscent of the designer’s extravagant runway creations. He imagined a red carpet filled with celebrities donning elaborate Marie Antoinette-inspired costumes or tightly laced corsets that would echo Galliano’s signature dramatic flair.
“The buzz surrounding this theme was palpable,” recalled Valencia, who counts stars like Beyoncé and Rihanna among his clientele. “It felt like the same level of excitement we experienced during the camp-themed gala back in 2019.”
