The impact of grassroots movements on youth can be profound, as illustrated by the documentary “Favela Rising.” This film not only highlights social change but also serves as an inspiration for initiatives like the youth charity I am involved with, where two members of Ezra Collective first crossed paths.
In my early years in Great Yarmouth, my musical experiences were largely traditional—learning piano and violin, participating in orchestras, and singing familiar tunes in choir. Music felt like a structured privilege, meticulously curated for me. However, my perspective shifted dramatically when I moved to London at 18 to pursue music at university. It quickly became evident that my aspirations of becoming a performer were out of reach.
Yet, my academic journey unveiled two pivotal subjects: music therapy and the role of music within cultural industries. These areas emphasized the power of music beyond performance, focusing on its potential to impact lives. As I neared graduation, I resolved to forge a career in organizations that utilize music as a tool for healing and empowerment, hoping to extend the opportunities I had received to others in need.
