Emerging from Southeast Asia, girl bands from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are making waves on the global music scene by blending traditional elements with contemporary styles.
Maloi Ricalde of the Filipina group BINI emphasizes the universal appeal of music. “We all know that music is a universal language,” she states, highlighting the band’s signature fusion of tropical pop and traditional melodies, alongside a mix of English and Tagalog lyrics. Their vibrant aesthetic, featuring silver knee-highs and pastel colors, further complements their unique sound.
“Incorporating Filipino language, Filipino culture, Filipino sound, into our music, it really gives identity and meaning to our music,” Ricalde expressed in an interview with the Guardian, underlining the importance of cultural representation in their work.
